Back in the spring of 1995, a weekly Greek language course held at Worcester Technical College was coming to a close. Over the weeks and months a special friendship had developed between the class and the course leader, Eleni Carroll. We thought about how we might stay in touch and decided to continue to meet regularly and form a local Anglo Hellenic friendship club.

On the 17th May 1995 the inaugural planning meeting of the WAHC was held at the Pheasant Inn, New Street, Worcester, where officers were elected and a formal constitution agreed to:

  • Promote and encourage an understanding of Greek language, Greek people and culture.
  • Present opportunities for members to share information on their travels in Greece.
  • Invite guest speakers on a wide variety of specialist Hellenic topics.
  • Visit topical venues e.g. Byzantine exhibitions, Ashmolean Museum, British Museum.
  • Form a library exchanging books on Greece between members.
  • Promote language refresher courses during the year.
  • Examine and comment on: Hellenic history, geography, politics etc

The first programme meeting was held in a lecture room at the Worcester College of Technology later that month when co-founder Eddie Cureton presented an illustrated talk on his specialist subject, 'The Orchids of Greece' to around 20 members and guests.

Some 13 years later we are still going strong with around 40 paid-up members. We continue to enjoy the camaraderie and friendship that has grown up over the years. We welcome new members. Indeed, we pride ourselves on the filoxenia (hospitality to strangers) that is the bedrock of Greek culture.
